Our Volunteer Advocates take urgent referrals from Auckland Police or Auckland Hospital during evenings (in pairs) and weekends, and do callouts to people experiencing domestic violence at their homes or other safe location.

Shine receives urgent victim referrals from Auckland City Police and Auckland hospitals. Shine's Advocates respond immediately and visit the person to offer immediate support, risk assessment and safety planning. This is done by staff during business hours, and by Volunteer Advocates after hours.

Our office-based Volunteer Advocates are rostered onto shifts during office hours at our main office in Kingsland, to work alongside staff Advocates.

All Volunteer Advocates receive comprehensive training as well as ongoing support and supervision. Volunteer Callout Advocates receive field training and support during/after completing classroom training. Office-based volunteers are supported and supervised by experienced senior staff.

Our Volunteer Advocates are adult women from all cultures, communities and age groups.

 Requirements are:

  • Ability to relate to a wide range of people
  • Commitment to improving the safety and wellbeing of adults and children who experience domestic violence
  • Commitment to the principles of Te Tiriti O Waitangi
  • Ability to undertake our 36 hour initial training
  • Commitment to regular shifts for at least a year following completion of training
  • A driver’s licence and access to a reliable car – petrol costs are reimbursed.

“This is by no means an easy job, and volunteers having to face very sensitive situations head on. Shine’s volunteers get a chance to make a real difference in the lives of people affected by domestic violence,”
