About Shine

What is Shine?

Shine is a leading specialist family violence charity. Our mission is to make homes violence-free and support victims of domestic abuse.

Unfortunately, our country has the highest rates of family violence in the OECD. Shine works every day to change this, supporting Kiwis to make our homes safer.

We would love you to join us.

Shine was founded in 1990 and is well-established. We take a broad approach to stopping violence in our homes, working to help make victims safer, as well as preventing violence.

Our frontline Advocates work with women experiencing family violence to make them and their children safer. KIDshine offers support for children who have been exposed to violence. Plus, Shine runs non-violence programmes to help those using violence to change their behaviour.

We also deliver a range of training and education programmes such as our DVFREE workplace programme and Shine RESPOND community professionals training. These programmes are designed to help employees and professionals recognise family violence in workplaces and communities and know how to respond.

When you give to Shine you join with like-minded people who are passionate about stopping family violence. These people can be found in many different organisations and communities, including District Health Boards and other healthcare providers, corporates, community groups, the NZ Police and Oranga Tamariki.

Currently, we only have the resources to help a fraction of the people who need it. Did you know that in New Zealand:

  • Every 3 minutes NZ Police attend a family violence callout(1)

  • 1 in 3 women have experienced physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence in their lifetime. When psychological and emotional abuse is included, that figures rises to 55%(2)

  • A woman is killed by a family member every 3.5 weeks(3)

  • On average, 2.4 people have been killed by a family member every month over the last 10 years. Included in this are children: a child is killed by a family member every 5 weeks(4)

With your support, we can raise the funds we need to ensure that everyone who experiences family violence can receive the support they need.

Please join us to help more families find safety, dignity and a path to a better future.
